No. While much of our support is offered during UNFCCC sessions (during subsidiary bodies’ meetings in June and governing bodies’ meetings in November/December), we also provide legal advice, training, and resources year-round.

LRI works closely with partners to tailor training sessions based on the participants’ specific needs and their prior experience on the subject(s). Sessions may include teaching materials, presentations, and hands-on exercises.

Who We Work With

Negotiators from Climate-Vulnerable Countries

LRI offers free legal assistance to help negotiators interpret legal texts, draft interventions or submissions, assess options, and engage effectively in international climate talks.

Lawyers from Developing Countries

LRI offers legal training, mentoring, and access to resources to strengthen climate law expertise and support national and international engagement. LRI also welcomes lawyers with climate-related expertise to join its network of pro bono advisers.

Policymakers

We provide tailored legal guidance to support the development and review of national climate legislation and frameworks.

Volunteering & Partnerships

We welcome experienced legal professionals from all regions. Legal experts contribute pro bono through legal advice and publications that support LRI’s domestic and international work. There are also opportunities for less experienced lawyers to assist with legal research. Time commitments vary depending on availability and project needs.

LRI offers lawyers at all levels the chance to contribute through research, advice, collaborating on publications or joining the team as a Liaison Officer during UNFCCC meetings.

LRI collaborates with NGOs, research and academic institutions, and other organisations to develop legal resources, procure legal advice and deliver capacity building training.

LRI has some research projects that arise as part of its legal advisory service. We partner with academics, often supported by their students, who take on such projects. In addition, LRI takes on LLM or master’s level students with a legal background as volunteers to support its advisory service.

LRI provides unique access to free, high-quality legal support, addressing imbalances in the climate negotiations and supporting climate law developments processes at national level, and strengthening long-term legal capacity for climate action.
